gage
gage, sometimes gauge, a term used at sea in relation to the direction of the wind. A ship which is to windward of another has the weather gage of it; one to leeward has the lee gage. It was a point of great significance in naval battle during the days of sail, either gage giving certain advantages to the fleet commander according to the way in which he wished to fight the battle.
