forelock
forelock, a flat wedge or pin driven through the hole in the shackle of a large anchor to secure the shackle pin, much in the nature of a cotter pin. They were usually held in place by a pellet of lead which, when struck with a sledgehammer, expanded to fill the cavity behind the head. A later method was to insert a lead ring which fitted into a cavity and held the pin in position until removed with a shearing punch.
