following Referring to the side of an object, or member of a group of objects, that trails behind in motion across the sky or across the face of a rotating body. Examples are the following component of a double star or a group of sunspots; the following side of a planetary feature; the following limb of a planet; or the following side of a telescopic field of view. The leading side is said to be preceding.
