flotilla

flotilla

flotilla, from the Spanish diminutive of flota, a fleet, flotilla, a little fleet, a name especially connected in navies with a group of destroyers, submarines, or other small warships below the size of a cruiser. It was occasionally used in naval circles as a collective noun for all small surface craft. However, the more general meaning was restricted to the ships which made up one group under the command of a captain, the individual ships in a flotilla being commanded by lieutenant commanders or lieutenants.

In the Royal Navy the word has today almost completely died out, having been replaced by squadron.
