flickering

flickering

flickering Rapid, irregular fluctuations in a star's brightness over minutes or hours which, in some cases, may amount to several tenths of a magnitude. Flickering occurs in many interacting binary systems, including AM Herculis stars, and certain symbiotic stars. It is thought to arise from instabilities in a hot spot (1) or in the inner region of an accretion disk, or, in AM Herculis stars, in the accretion column above a magnetic pole.
