flash spectrum
flash spectrum The emission-line spectrum of the Sun's chromosphere, which flashes out in the few seconds before totality in a solar eclipse. Slitless spectrographs show the flash spectrum as a series of thin crescents, each marking the position of a prominent emission line such as the hydrogen Balmer lines and the H and K lines of ionized calcium, which are emitted by the chromosphere.
