fault-tolerant system
fault-tolerant system A system where a fault, be it a hardware or software fault, does not immediately lead to total failure. A fault-tolerant system either degrades gracefully when some fault is detected or carries on with the fault hidden from users. There are a number of techniques used to implement fault-tolerant DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS. The most common is replication. Hardware replication involves constructing a system with a number of computers with each carrying out the same function; when one of these computers malfunctions its processing is taken over by one of the other computers. Another technique is DATA REPLICATION where an important database resides on a number of computers. If one of these computers malfunctions then this would not be a disaster, as another computer would be available to take part in any processes involving the database.
