extranet
extranet An INTRANET which is also available to users outside the organization that owns it. A typical extranet application is where a manufacturer integrates its database with databases from its component suppliers so that production planning can be carried out more easily. This EDI application requires two intranets to be joined together to form an extranet which can then be accessed by selected staff from the manufacturing organization and its suppliers. The late 1990s saw a large increase in companies sharing information with other companies and customers; consequently there has been a major increase in the deployment of intranet and extranet technology.
