As ambassador to Vienna (1757) he strengthened the Austrian alliance by conducting first negotiations toward the marriage of Marie Antoinette with the future Louis XVI. Choiseul, Étienne François, duc de (1719–85) French statesman, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1758–70). He concluded the Family Compact of 1761 with CHARLES III of Spain and, considering the weakness of the French position, was a successful negotiator at the Treaty of PARIS in 1763.
