environmental variance

environmental variance The portion of phenotypic variance that is due to differences in the environments to which the individuals in a population have been exposed. The total amount of variance observed among individuals in a population will be made up by an environmental component, determined by environmental variation, and a genetic component (see genetic variance), determined by the variation that is inherited.
