acrography: the art or technique of carving a wood block in relief. —acrographer , n. —acrographic , acrographical , adj.
burinist: an engraver, usually in metal. Also called graver .
cameography: the art or technique of engraving cameos.
dactylioglyph: 1 . the name of the engraver inscribed on a gemstone or finger ring.; 2 . an artist who engraves precious stones and metals. Also dactylioglyphist .
dactylioglyphy: the art of engraving gemstones and finger rings.
dactyliography: the art of engraving gemstones. —dactyliographer , n. —dactyliographic , adj.
ectypography: a form of engraving in which the design is in relief instead of being sunk.
galvanography: the use of chemically induced electric current rather than chemicals to produce plates for copperplate engraving. —galvanograph , n. —galvanographic , ad).
glyptograph: 1 . an engraving on a gemstone or other small object.; 2 . the stone or object engraved.
glyptology: 1 . the art of engraving, especially on gems.; 2 . the study of this art.
lithoglyph: 1 . an engraving or carving on a gem stone.; 2 . the stone thus engraved. —lithoglyphic, lithoglyptic , adj.
lithoglypher: Obsolete, an engraver of precious stones.
lithoglyptics: the art of engraving or carving precious stones. —lithoglyptic , adj.

photoglyphy: photogravure or the process of engraving by means of photography. —photoglyphic , adj.
photogravure: 1 . a form of photoengraving in which the photograph is reproduced on an intaglio surface and then transferred to paper.; 2 . the photograph produced by this process.

siderography: a technique of engraving on steel plates, often used in the printing of banknotes. —siderograph, siderographist , n. —siderographic, siderographical , adj.

engraving in its broadest sense, the art of cutting lines in metal, wood, or other material either for decoration or for reproduction through printing . In its narrowest sense, it is an intaglio printing process in which the lines are cut in a metal plate with a graver, or burin. Furrows are cleanly cut out, raising no burr, and then filled with ink which is transferred under high pressure to the printing surface of the press. The earliest known engravings printed on paper date from about the middle of the 15th cent. Among the early master engravers were Dürer, Schongauer, and Lucas van Leyden. Wood engraving differs from true engraving in that it is a relief process. During the 19th cent., steel engraving enjoyed a short popularity as a reproduction process because it made possible a large number of proofs, but it was superseded by photomechanical processes (see photoengraving ). engraving. Term applied collectively to the various processes of cutting a design into a plate or block of metal or wood, and to the prints taken from these plates or blocks (see print for a classification of these processes). In everyday usage, the term usually refers more specifically to one of the processes, known technically as line engraving. In a different sense, the term ‘engraving’ is applied to the incising of designs on stone, especially in prehistoric art.

engraving. Term applied in its broadest sense to the various processes of cutting a design into a plate or block of metal or wood, and to the prints taken from these plates or blocks (see Print for a classification of these processes). In everyday usage, the term more usually applies to one of the processes, known more technically as line engraving.
