dunnage
dunnage, loose wood or wooden blocks used in the holds of the old-fashioned cargo ship. They were employed to secure the cargo above the floors and away from the ship's sides to protect it from any sweating of the ship's plates, and also to wedge it firmly so that it did not get thrown about in a heavy sea. Container ships and containerization have replaced the old methods of transporting cargo.
