drifter

The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea | 2006 | Copyright

drifter, a type of fishing vessel, originally fitted with sails but today fitted with an engine or engines. It uses a drift net which is shot by the drifter, which then lies at the leeward end of the net, drifting with it, until is time to haul the net in.

Drifters are essentially fishing boats which operate in home waters, and are found mainly in the North Sea and around the coasts of Scotland and Ireland, but they are also common in other parts of the world.
