drachma

drachma A unit of money in NT times. In the parable of Luke 15: 8–9 the silver coins (NRSV, REB), ten drachmas (NJB), refer to coins of Greek origin, circulating amongst all Hellenistic peoples, and worth about the same as the Roman denarius; two of these were sufficient to pay the innkeeper's bill for looking after the victim of a mugging (Luke 10: 35).
