doghouse

The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea | 2006 | Copyright

doghouse, an American term for the topside sleeping hutches provided for crewmen on ships involved in the slave trade, so as to leave more space below for the living ‘cargo’. The word evolved into a yachting term, to denote the short deckhouse or main hatchway which is raised above the level of a yacht's cabin top.
