discoverer
discoverer. An Irish act of 1709 created a legal procedure whereby a Protestant who filed a bill in chancery ‘discovering’ a property transaction prohibited under the penal laws thereby became entitled to the Catholic party's interest in that transaction. The complex prohibitions on the sale, leasing, and inheritance of land were thus in theory made self‐enforcing. But in practice many bills of discovery were collusive, filed by agents of the Catholic party to forestall genuine predators.
