Chester-le-Street, diocese of. Created in 883, when the monks of Lindisfarne, evicted in 875, settled here on the south bank of the Tyne with Cuthbert's relics. The cult of the saint made it the centre of wealth and power in the north-east until the see was moved to Durham in 995.
