Blackburn, diocese of
Blackburn, diocese of. The see, created in 1927 mostly out of the Manchester diocese, comprises much of Lancashire except for Liverpool and Manchester, a mixture of countryside and cotton-mill towns. The cathedral is the former parish church of St Mary's, built in 1818, early Gothic Revival in style, extended in the 1930s, 1950s, and 1960s.
