design plan or arrangement of line, form, mass, color, and space in a pattern. A design may be created to serve a functional purpose as in architecture and in industrial designs or else purely to provide aesthetic pleasure. The design may refer to preparatory stages for a work of art (see drawing ; cartoon ) or it may be extended to include the compositional elements in a finished work of art.

C. delineate, draw XVII. In form — F. désigner indicate, designate, and L. dēsignāre mark out, point out, delineate, depict, contrive, DESIGNATE. All the meanings derive ult. from the L. word, but sense B has been affected by DESIGN 1 and F. †desseigner, sense C by F. dessiner, †dessigner (an alt. of desseigner after It. disignare).
So designate †indicated XV (once), marked out or selected for office, appointed or nominated XVII. — L. dēsignātus, pp. of dēsignāre, f. DE- 3 + signāre mark, SIGN; see -ATE 2. designate vb. appoint or nominate for office XVIII; point out, name XIX. f. pp. stem of L. dēsignāre; see -ATE 3. designation XIV. — (O)F. or L.

de·sign / dəˈzīn/ • n. 1. a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is built or made: he has just unveiled his design for the new museum. ∎  the art or action of conceiving of and producing such a plan or drawing: good design can help the reader understand complicated information the cloister is of late twelfth century design. ∎  an arrangement of lines or shapes created to form a pattern or decoration: pottery with a lovely blue and white design. 2. purpose, planning, or intention that exists or is thought to exist behind an action, fact, or material object: the appearance of design in the universe. • v. [tr.] decide upon the look and functioning of (a building, garment, or other object), typically by making a detailed drawing of it: a number of architectural students were designing a factory | [as adj.] (designed) specially designed buildings. ∎  (often be designed) do or plan (something) with a specific purpose or intention in mind: [tr.] the tax changes were designed to stimulate economic growth. PHRASES: by design as a result of a plan; intentionally: I became a presenter by default rather than by design. have designs on aim to obtain (something desired), typically in a secret and dishonest way: he suspected her of having designs on the family fortune.
