demilitarized zone
demilitarized zone The area delineated by a FIREWALL which separates the outside world from valuable computer resources such as FILES or sensitive computers. The demilitarized zone acts as a barrier to those who want to make unauthorized intrusions into a network. It is constructed of a combination of hardware such as ROUTERS and software. Usually the term is used in connection with architectures which make use of a dual firewall where it describes the space between the two servers used.
