deferent
deferent In the Ptolemaic system of planetary motion, a hypothetical circle around the Earth, although the Earth was not necessarily at the exact centre. Along the circumference of the deferent moved the centre of a smaller circle, the epicycle. The deferent was effectively the orbit of a planet. See also Equant.
