decision support system

decision support system A system which is used to analyse historical data about a company's performance. Such a system produces reports on past performance and predictions of future performance. A typical question asked by such a system for a manufacturing company would be ‘Which of our suppliers has been most reliable in delivering components?’ Decision support systems are also used to analyse scenarios based on conditions which might hold in the future: for example, to provide data on the profitability of a bank based on a proposed increase in charges.
