dagger
dagger, a steel bar which plays an essential part in the launching mechanism of a ship. When the dog shores, the blocks of timber which support either side of a ship on the launching ways, are knocked out, the dagger acts as a trigger which releases the vessel and starts it down the launching ways. Nowadays when a ship is launched the whole operation is performed by power, and men with sledgehammers no longer knock out the dog shores, but the principle and mechanics remain unaltered.
