daffodil

daffodil in poetry, the bright yellow flowers of the daffodil are associated with the approach of spring. The name is recorded from the mid 16th century and comes from late Middle English affodill (the initial d- is unexplained), from medieval Latin affodilus, a variant of Latin asphodilus (see asphodel).

Daffodil ♀ One of the rarer flower names, which perhaps originated as an expanded version of Daffy, a pet form of Daphne. The flower got its name in the 14th century from a run-together form of Dutch de affodil ‘the asphodel’.

daffodil Bulbous flowering plant, family Amaryllidaceae. Long leaves grow from the base and the single flowers are yellow or yellow and white, with a bell-like central cup and oval petals. Height: to 45cm (18in). Genus Narcissus.
