custos rotulorum
custos rotulorum. The officer charged in the 14th cent. with keeping the records of the county sessions, though the name did not come into use until the 15th cent. He was always a justice of the quorum and appointed the clerk of the peace. Later the office became identified with the lord-lieutenancy, though they had separate functions.
