crutch / krəch/ • n. 1. a long stick with a crosspiece at the top, used as a support under the armpit by a lame person. ∎ [in sing.] fig. a thing used for support or reassurance: they use the Internet as a crutch for their loneliness. 2. archaic another term for crotch (of the body or a garment). • v. [intr.] move by means of or as if by means of crutches. |

1. A stanchion with two short, curved arms at the end shaped to take the main boom of a yacht, or other fore-and-aft-rigged vessel, when the sails are stowed. It is fitted on the vessel's counter and is used to secure the boom and prevent it swinging from side to side when the vessel rolls. See also gallows. 2. Alternative name for a rowlock. |
