crater counting
crater counting The counting of impact craters of various size ranges within a given area or geological unit of a planetary surface, in order to determine its age. The older a given feature, the more impacts will have struck it. On the Moon, for example, the densely cratered highlands are clearly much older than the sparsely cratered maria.
