cot·ton·mouth / ˈkätnˌmou[unvoicedth]/ • n. a large, dangerous semiaquatic pit viper (Agkistrodon piscivorus) that inhabits lowland swamps and waterways of the southeastern U.S. When threatening, it opens its mouth wide to display the white interior. Also called water moccasin.
