conte crayon

conté crayon

conté crayon. A type of hard crayon, named after Nicolas-Jacques Conté (1755–1805), a French scientist who worked as a portrait painter in his youth and invented the modern graphite pencil in the early 1790s. Conté crayons are similar to chalk, but they have a slightly greasy quality that makes them less liable to crumble. Black and warm red are the most common colours. Seurat made some of his best drawings in black conté crayon.
