comprador
comprador, the equivalent in the Far East of a ship chandler. The word entered the English language, and marine literature, largely through the novels and stories of Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham, who both wrote about the East. Originally it was a Portuguese word introduced in the East to denote a house steward and later adopted by business houses, and particularly those dealing with sea business, as the title of the chief native representative or manager.

comprador A Portuguese term, literally ‘buyer’, used to denote the main indigenous agent in trading-houses on the China coast. By extension, ‘comprador bourgeoisie’ is a term used for a social class deemed to be compliant with foreign interests, and uninterested in developing the national economy. It is usually contrasted with the class of the ‘national bourgeoisie’ which is considered to have this potential.
