complementation map A gene map in which each mutation is represented by a line or ‘bar’ that overlaps the bars for other mutations with which it will not complement. Non-complementing mutants are represented by overlapping, continuous lines. Each bar probably represents the region of the polypeptide that is distorted by an amino-acid substitution. Complementation maps are usually linear, and the positions of mutants on the complementation and genetic maps usually accord.
