commodore
commodore, in the Royal Navy an intermediate rank between captain and rear admiral, often held by a senior captain when appointed to certain commands or posts of extra responsibility. It is not a step in the ladder of promotion—a captain is normally promoted direct to rear admiral—but pertains only to the responsibility of the job. In the US Navy it is not a rank but a position held by an officer below flag rank appointed to command two or more ships. A commodore in the Royal Navy flies a broad pennant as the sign of his rank; a commodore in the US Navy flies a burgee bearing the identification number of his command. In merchant navies the senior captain of a commercial shipping line is usually known as the commodore of the line. In a yacht club the commodore is the senior officer of the club by election of its members.
