colt

colt, in the old days of the Royal Navy a short piece of rope with a knot in the end used by petty officers, with varying degrees of brutality, to urge men on to work. Its use was officially forbidden by the Admiralty in 1809, though it persisted in some ships for a few years longer. See also start, to.
