coaster, generic term for small merchant ships, such as the collier and the tramp, which traded around the coasts of the British Isles during the late 19th–early 20th centuries. They still do so but in much reduced numbers.

coaster A term used to describe either a defective CD ROM or one, usually sent by an INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER, which is not needed. The name derives from the fact that these CD ROMs are often used as mats for mugs of hot liquid.
