1. Pattern involving the division of a surface into equal squares (chequers) treated alternately in different ways, such as in colour or texture: it is commonly found in tile or stone pavements resembling a chessboard and called chequer-work. 2. Type of diaper-work in which the compartments are all square, as in late-Romanesque and Gothic surface-carving. |
