cathead
cathead, a heavy piece of curved timber projecting from each bow of a ship for the purpose of holding anchors which were fitted with a stock in position for letting go or for securing them on their beds after weighing. It holds the upper sheaves of the cat purchase which is used to cat the anchor. Since the invention of the stockless anchor ships no longer have these large catheads, nor do they need to cat their anchors before letting them go.
