catastrophic evolution

catastrophic evolution

catastrophic evolution (catastrophic speciation) Theory proposing that environmental stress can lead to the sudden re-arrangement of chromosomes, which in self-fertilizing organisms may then give rise sympatrically to a new species (see SYMPATRIC EVOLUTION). Recent research suggests that at best this explanation applies only to some special cases.
