canna
canna [Lat.,=cane], any plant of the genus Canna, tropical and subtropical perennials, grown in temperate regions in parks and gardens for the large foliage and spikelike, usually red or yellow blossoms. Today, most cultivated cannas are hybrids, but two species are found wild in the S United States, one called Indian shot because of the hard shotlike seeds. C. edulis, Queensland arrowroot, is cultivated in the tropics for its rootstock, a commercial arrowroot starch. Canna is classified in the division Magnoliophyta , class Liliopsida, order Zingiberales, family Cannaceae. |

Canna
Canna ♀ Apparently from the name of a genus of plants that have attractive, brightly coloured flowers and are widely cultivated in parts of the world with a warm climate. This is now relatively well established as a first name in Australia. The botanical name represents Latin canna ‘reed’.

Canna
Canna (family Cannaceae) A genus of rhizomatous (see RHIZOME) herbs which are cultivated for their showy inflorescences. C. edulis of the Andes is cultivated for its edible rhizomes (Queensland arrowroot or achira). There are 25 species, occurring in tropical and subtropical America.
