calibre

calibre, a term used for the measurement of guns. It is employed in two senses. In its strict meaning it is a way of expressing the length of the barrel of a naval gun, found by dividing the barrel's length (muzzle to breech) by its interior diameter at the muzzle. So a gun described as 8-in/75-calibre has a barrel 600-in long (8x75=600). In its second sense it is the bore of the gun, again measured at the muzzle, such as 6-in. calibre, 12-in. calibre, etc.
