cabinet painting
cabinet painting. Term applied to fairly small easel paintings, especially ones intended for a domestic setting. The term has no precise limits in terms of dimensions, but is often applied, for example, to 17th-century Dutch genre paintings, which were usually painted to fit into unpretentious bourgeois interiors.
