buttress root
buttress root A stilt root, most commonly found in large, tropical trees, that emerges adventitiously from the trunk and is flattened, so it resembles an approximately triangular board, attached to the trunk along the whole of one edge and widest where it enters the ground. The root provides the tree with mechanical support.
