broad pennant
broad pennant, a swallow-tailed pennant, flown from the masthead, and in most navies the distinguishing flag of a commodore. In Britain, until 1864, there were three qualities of broad pennants, red, white, and blue, indicating the commodores of the first, second, and third class and corresponding to the organization of the British Navy by squadronal colours. After that date all commodores' broad pennants in the Royal Navy became white with a red St George's cross.
