bozzetto
bozzetto. A small rough model, usually in wax or clay, made in preparation for a larger sculpture in more durable material. By extension, the term (a diminutive of the Italian bozzo, ‘rough stone’) is sometimes also applied to an oil sketch. In this second sense, the word is not always clearly differentiated from modello, but it is useful to reserve the latter word for a somewhat more elaborate type of preliminary design, especially one intended to be shown to a patron.
