bot

bot

bot A program that carries out some repetitive or periodic task for a user. Typical tasks include finding email addresses for SPAMMING programs, gathering WEB PAGE statistics, providing updates for a user when stock prices change, EMAIL FILTERing, and maliciously sending a POSTING to any NEWSGROUP that it encounters. See also CANCELBOT, CHATTERBOT, NEWS BOT, and GOVERNMENT BOT. Bots are similar to AGENTS; indeed there is no hard and fast rule for determining whether a program is a bot or an agent. The derivation of the word is unclear. Two derivations place it as a shortened form of the word ‘robot’ and as an abbreviation for ‘Box o' Tricks’.
