borstal
borstal. In 1901 a prison for male offenders aged 16 to 23 was established at Borstal in Kent. A similar institution was opened in Ireland, at Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, in 1906. In Northern Ireland after 1920 mle offenders were initially sent to a borstal in England, but in 1927 part of the reformatory at Malone in Belfast was converted into a borstal. In 1956 this borstal was transferred to Millisle, Co. Down, and a second borstal was opened in Armagh jail in 1963. A borstal for girls existed in Armagh between 1954 and 1961; thereafter girls were sent to a Scottish borstal. In the south the Clonmel borstal continued to operate until 1956 when it was replaced by St Patrick's Institution at Mountjoy jail in Dublin. This was supplemented by open young offenders' institutions in Co. Dublin (1968) and Co. Cavan (1972). No female borstal was established in the Republic.
