booty

The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea | 2006 | Copyright

booty, a form of prize which, when a ship was captured at sea, was permitted to be distributed among the captors at once. In an old definition it was everything that could be picked up by hand above the main deck, all else in the ship having to be legally condemned by a prize court before its value could be distributed among the captors. As may be imagined, it was a custom which allowed of much abuse. This form of prize ‘pickings’ was abolished at the end of the Napoleonic War (1803–15).

boo·ty¹ / ˈboōtē/ • n. valuable stolen goods, esp. those seized in war: the militias supply themselves with booty from the raided civilian populations. ∎ inf. something gained or won: now the booty: four winners will receive prizes. boo·ty² • n. (pl. -ties) inf. a person's buttocks.
