bole

bole

bole (or bolus). A type of fine, soft, slightly greasy clay with several uses in art. It is found in various colours, including greyish blue, but most commonly it is red (coloured by the presence of iron oxide). Red bole is used, mixed with size, as a base for gilding; it provides a smooth surface for the gold leaf and its colour helps to impart a warm, glowing quality to the burnished surface. It was much used in this way in early Italian panel paintings with gold backgrounds, and it was also popular as a ground for oil paintings in the 17th and 18th centuries. Often it has caused such paintings to darken and take on a brown or red cast as the oil paint has become more transparent with age, allowing the ground to show through in thinly painted areas (this effect can be seen in paintings by Poussin and Piazzetta, for example). White bole (also known as kaolin and China clay) is an essential ingredient of porcelain.
