bluejacket, a descriptive term used to describe the seaman of a British warship. It came into being in 1858 when rules for the uniform of seamen were promulgated, which included a jacket ‘to be made of navy blue cloth double-breasted, with stand tall collar … to reach the hips … one inside breast-pocket and seven black horn crown and anchor buttons’.
