blue ensign
blue ensign. When the division of the British fleet by squadronal colours was abolished in 1864, the blue ensign was reserved for naval auxiliary vessels. Owners of yachts registered with certain yacht clubs are granted permission by the British Admiralty to fly the blue ensign. It is then sometimes defaced by an insignia or design in its hoist, normally that of the club to which the yacht belongs.
