bear·er / ˈbe(ə)rər/ • n. 1. a person or thing that carries or holds something: I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings [in comb.] a flag-bearer. ∎  a carrier of equipment on an expedition. ∎  a tree or plant that bears fruit or flowers. 2. a person who presents a check or other order to pay money: promissory notes payable to the bearer. ∎  [as adj.] payable to the possessor: bearer bonds.

BEARER

One who is the holder or possessor of an instrument that is negotiable—for example, a check, a draft, or a note—and upon which a specific payee is not designated.

A negotiable instrument that is payable to "bearer" or to "cash" or to "the order of cash," that is, not naming a payee, is a bearer instrument, and is called "bearer" paper.
